Why does my iMac sleep randomly?

It's been less than three months. I just got it out of the carton to set up. In less than a month I noticed the unit sleeps randomly.

I installed a fan-speed app and it revealed the unit was heating up quick.

I ran diagnostics at startup and got a message saying my fan is not working as it should.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

First take the fan control software off the system! You don't want any trace of it on the system.

If you've only had the system 3 months I would take it back to who sold it to you as it clearly had problems when you got it.

If its too late to get your money back (private sale) or get it fixed by the seller then we'll need to dig into the root cause issue.

First we need to collect some better diagnostic data, download this app: Temperature Gauge Pro it will allow you to see what is happening with the temps & fan within the system. In this case you should buy the full version as you also want the logging function so you can track back when you encounter a problem what happened then. The other tool here is Activity Monitor which is in your Utility folder. Here you need to keep it visible on your desktop so you can see whats happening with the processes and what process/s which is consuming the most CPU cycles. So when you encounter the system going to sleep look at whats happening.

Post a screen shot of TGP as well as part of the log that you encountered the problem. As for Activity monitor capture the top 10 process IDs when you see the problem.

Good Luck!

Will do as you say. Just a quick reminder...the problem started before I installed the fan software.

I suspected the fan software wasn't the cause. It will just mess us up trying to figure things out. In the case of returning your system you don't want to give them a reason to refuse you which they could argue the software was the cause (which we know here it wasn't in this case). That can't be said for other systems.
