Want to upgrade CPU & drive

I need som help. I have imac 2006 G5 2,16ghz intel core 2 duo , grafics Ati radeon 1600 32 bits only. I want to know if it's possible to change cpu and hard drive for ssd can I run yosemite after those repair ? thanks a lot if you answer me.

It is not possible to upgrade the CPU or GPU unless you found an entire logic board from a higher end model of that year. The Maximum OS for that model is 10.6.8. Also it does not have SATA 3 to take advantage of an SSD.

That iMac is considered obsolete and no longer being supported. It will barely be usable on modern websites. Eventually items like Flash player and other web plugins will stop support for 10.6. This iMac would be a good type writer.

I would strongly recommend upgrading the RAM to the max here (4 GB) if you haven't already.

As to the upgrading the HD to a SSD: I don't think that's going to help you that much. The problem here is the systems HD SATA port is only SATA I (1.5 Gb/s). I think you'll do better going with a SSHD drive. Seagate makes one that is a perfect here as it is designed the work with these older systems. Here is the spec sheet for it: Seagate Desktop SSHD spec sheet. Note the transfer speeds supported line. Make sure what ever drive you get can support SATA I (1.5 Gb/s).

Sadly, this system can not support Yosemite the best it will support is Lion 10.7.x.

While this systems lifespan is nearing its end, if it is still running it should give you another year or two. But don't expect it to run anything newer apps wise. You need to run 32bit apps which are nolonger being made.

You would be best to try and run Chrome as Safari will be out dated.

Mayer I didn't catch the 2.16 in the original question. You got me. I think I ignored it probably because Ben also stated it was an iMac G5. Either way I'm pretty sure Apple.com is a better resource than a low end Mac resellers website.
