Powers on, shows an icon of a file folder. Can't find drive?

Not sure where to begin with this issue. Have an old imac, not sure which generation, and pulled it out of the attic the other day. Lime colour. Thought it would be fun to get it running and grab the music and pictures off of the hard drive. Powers on, chimes, but that's it.

What's the first step I should take to begin to fix this? Where/how would i get the operating system to reinstall?

Are all my files gone?

Thanks,

Derek

Any number of things could be wrong. The hard drive could have just become disconnected internally, it could also have gone bad. best thing I could tell you is if the data is what your after, pop it open get out the hard drive and plug it into another mac and see if it recognizes it. You can get the hard drive enclosure kits that with USB adapters at Best Buy. it it works you have an external hard drive, if not return the kit.
