Computer turns on normally, applications unresponsive

Computer turns on normally, applications unresponsive. Should I replace RAM or Hard Drive? it may be neither one of these,

Update (10/05/2015)

It comes up on the normal screen, everything looks like it usually does. When I try to open anything I just get the beach ball. I've never run any virus protection, unless something is automatically run on OS X.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Not quite enough information. What screen is it stuck on? Is it making any noise? What happens if you boot from an external drive?

What virus protection are you using? When was it run last?

Do you have an external bootable drive which to boot up your system? If not do you have a friend who owns a Mac system which you can setup a boot drive?

I suspect you have some corruption issues or the drive is overly full.

To fix this you'll need to boot the system up under an external drive to run Disk Utility and you may need to clean out some space. You should have at least 1/4 to 1/3 free.
