makes a loud "BRRRRRRRing" sound when trying to start & doesn't start

Battery dead. Hooked up to charger. Try to start and a LOUD BRRRRRRR or Clucking sound comes from under the hood. Car will not start.

Put a charger on the thingy under the hood to jump start but didn't work. Battery itself is in the trunk. Should I have put the charger there instead?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Thank you all soooo much. It has made what seemed to be a weird problem, much easier to understand and to not be so worried about some massive expense to fix it. Being uneducated about cars is worse for me, being female, because I seem to be at the mercy of too many mechanics. With your help, I've solved the problem with only the expense of a new battery. With Gratitude. Sharon

Sharon not quite sure about the noise, but from what you are describing it is the starter solenoid making that noise. Recharge you battery and have it checked to see if it holds a charge. If a new battery does not fix that, check the starter itself. You can try to "hotwire" it to see if it works, most likely you will need to replace it.

This noise is what is made when a weak battery does not have enough power to engage the starter gear far enough to mesh in the flex plate/ring gear/flywheel.

Has it been sitting there for a while? If it tries to turn over, then the battery is fine. When was the last time you replaced your plugs and wires? It seems like its the actual starter or some component thereof rather than the battery. Hope this helps
