Why do I have to log in twice?

I log in and get prompted for another log-in. In addition, my inbox counts each message as two.

When I first turn on the Mac, I get a parrot icon and a login box. When I log in, I get another icon and login box. I get a sense that my Mac is running its OS twice, in parallel, which may be one reason that the computer runs so slowly. An incoming message is counted as two.

I'm not comfortable with Apple's customer service. Especially the wait time.
