You can try resetting your NVRA . Just hold down ⌘ CMD+⌥ OPT+p+r on restart and keep the keys held down until it chimes 3-4 times. Then let go. If that doesnt work you can also try entering Disk Utility and performing a permissions check.

Hi Rinda,
It sounds like your Mac is booting to the Recovery HD instead of Macintosh HD (or whatever you may have named your main OS volume).
When booted to the Recovery HD, try opening Disk Utility and seeing what drives are available in the side bar.
Do you see Macintosh HD? If so, is the Macintosh HD text greyed out? If the text is black, try running the Repair Disk option under First Aid. Warning though, if your data is not backed up, and your drive is faulty, this could make it a bit harder to recover the data on the drive.
If your data is backed up and you are OK with erasing the drive, format the drive using Disk Utility and then attempt to reload the OS using the option that is first presented to you when you boot to the Recovery HD.
