I have small squares about 1/4" that appear and then take over the whole screen that are multi coloured kind of like christmas lights that flash. at some point the screen becomes covered and large coloured squares appear and i have to shut it down. usually a pram reset keeps it going for about an hour before they appear again.

markbartkiw, sounds like a GPU error. connect an external monitor to your MBP and see if it displays the same squares. If so you are most likely having a GPU failure. Check on here to see if your computer qualifies for a free repair by Apple.

Thanks so much for the tip. Apparently it is one of the machines affected but i'm out of warranty so..
wonder if its worth fixing. Bummer.
Definitely and give Apple a friendly shout and tell them to fix it. Warranty or not.....
