Water Damaged iPhone will not turn on

After an unintended swim in the pool, my iPhone does not work. I used iFixit's battery replacement kit to disassemble my phone and take out the battery. Before trying the new battery, I did immerse the phone in 91% isopropyl alcohol for a couple of hours and let it dry for another hour. The old battery was completely discharged. Alas, putting in the new battery has not helped. I think my phone is hosed. Any ideas or suggestions?

arthuryoung, you say you placed your phone in isopropyl alcohol, but you are not giving us any details. I suggest that you disassemble your phone using these guides. You must remove all the EMI shields of the logic board. If you do not remove those you are not cleaning 3/4 of the board. Clean everything with +90% (no less than 90%) isopropyl alcohol. Follow this guide, and even so it was written for a 3G all the points are still pertinent to your phone. Pay particular attention to the SMD components, check for charred missing or broken missing. You can then dry the board in an oven or equivalent at 220deg F (not higher;-) for a few hours. Best way to clean it would of course be through an ultrasonic cleaner. Consider professional help with that When it is properly cleaned, replace the battery. All these steps are to avoid delayed failure caused by corrosion. Once all this is done, reassemble your phone and reevaluate. Disconnect all non-vital peripheries like cameras etc and try to start the phone with just the battery and/or charging cable and LCD connected. If it does, you know that one of the peripheral components shortens out your phone. Water damage is the hardest to diagnose since virtually any part can have failed.

Thanks. How do I remove the EMI shield? Will removing the EMI necessitate destroying it and replacing it?

Those are soldered on the board. Unsolder them and resolder later
