How do I remove a smashed screen with a suction cup?

I have a very smashed up front panel on my iphone 3gs and I am wondering, if I order the front panel replacement, wont I have trouble pulling the screen out in step two using the suction cup because it is so smashed up and air will get through the cracks in the smash and break the seal on the suction cup. Sorry, that was worded really awkwardly. I am sure there must be a way to do it because why else would you replace the front panel (ie. unless it was all smashed up)

Thanks

I would use clear packing tape and cover the whole screen (one piece should do it). Then use another piece of tape (making a tab) using it as the suction cup

Edited to add:

I know its an old topic but it might help others with the same issue :-)

+ yup, or double-sided tape ... or, !&*!, glue something onto the front panel if you're throwing it away anyway.

i would not use the suction cup method for that - i use the small blade of my victor inox sd knife. it's small enough to use it as a lever. but you can use any pocket knive with a small blade, the best point to use it as a lever is in the middle area, near the home button.
