Finding destination for installing operating disks.

I recently installed a new internal hard drive because mine was dead. The hard drive was blank obviously so I tried to install the original operating disks for PowerBook G4 but when it showed where you wanted to install the disks it was blank. I don't know if I have to format anything or what! Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Which drive the hard drive or the operating disks?

What should I format it to Mac OS Extended or Mac OS Standard or MS-DOS File System or UNIX File System???

by

Basically, Standard is the "old" format, and is really only there if you need to use the same HD with an old system. Extended was added in Mac OS 8.1 and includes many improvements, including more free space (the minimum file size has been made smaller, so less space is wasted with small files). You should use Extended, unless you need to use the HD with a pre-OS 8.1 machine. MS-DOS if you want to use it in a PC running Windows. UNIX if you want to install Umbutu.

Chosen Solution

Boot from the original system installation disk. Go to the second page of the system installation. The pull down menu will appear. Go to Utilities > Disk Utility and format the drive. Then you can install the system.
