Thank you. I was able to see the LEDs through the grill at the bottom of the computer but couldn't make them out. I opened the RAM slot and blew out the dust that accumulated there, while trying to position the computer for a better angle of the LEDs. All 4 were on. While I was wiggling the computer on its back for a better viewing angle through the grill, the screen came on and I could see that the computer had booted up normally and was at the login screen. Is it possible that the only issue might have been a loose cable connection? I have not opened the computer yet? I was able to copy all the documents and photos to an external drive (which was my main concern).

If it works, don't fix it. But it does sound like it could use a blow out with canned air. To much dirt in there can cause overheating. The dirtiest internal Macs come from the cleanest houses. Vacuuming stirs up dust into the air and your Mac ends up sucking it all in.

Thank you. The problem is intermittent and returned again. Sometimes the screen comes on, but most of the time it does not. When it does not it appears that only three of the LEDs are on (as best I can tell looking through the bottom grill). I did some additional testing turning on remote login and screen sharing. When the screen is black, the computer answers ping, and I can connect with SSH. I can also open up a remote display using Chicken of the VNC. Does this indicate that the problem may be isolated to the video card? If so should I open the computer and reseat/replace the video card? Thank you.

I've replaced a lot of video cards on the 2007 & 2008 models. The inverter also goes out. So look closely at the screen to see if you can discern the desktop. If you can then it's the inverter.
