the pilot lamp to indicate charging when the chrger is plugged in does not glow. the chrger tested to give around 19v. the battery temp is normal and no indication that the presense of the charger is sensed. the charger remains cool and the battery continues to discharge. before that, the charger plug input at the side of the laptop was very hot.

sound like the charger socket on the mainboard is broken or has faulty solderings - but it would be a very common problem.
can you move the plug slightly when its connected to the socket?

thank you markus. i moved the plug a little but no hint of connectivity. i'd suspect faulty soldering, as you suggested, or disconnected internal wiring due to excessive heat(?). i tried to look inside the casing, but with so many screws around, i gave up. thanks again
don't let the screws scare you - it's not that bad. you can use a copy/print of the bottomside of your computer to sort the screws, or use the service manual (click) - it has a screw guide in it.
