Clicking sound on 20 year old compaq armada 1120. Heatsink or HDD?

Hi. I have a 20 year old Compaq Armada 1120, which I am planning on playing old pc games on.

The thing is, it's making a clicking noise which is either coming from the heatsink fan, or the hard drive. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a way to figure out which one the sound is coming from. I think the clicking sound happens shortly after the hard drive stops running when the computer is idle, but I don't know for sure.

If it helps, here is the sound in question. You will probably need to turn the volume up quite a bit to hear it.

Clicking is generally hard drive issues. Back up ASAP. Overheating = fan issues.

It does get pretty hot pretty fast, and it doesn't sound like the click of death, but is there a way to tell for sure before fixing/replacing things?

I use a stethoscope

How would a stethoscope help? Did you really use one?

Yes I use a stethoscope all the time. Sometimes you can't tell when a machine is even on without one. Looks like they are out of stock at iFixit: [linked product missing or disabled: IF145-191-1]
