Is it possible to convert wifi only to GSM?

First, I understand that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite SM-T110 was built to be a wifi only model. However, while scrolling through the all apps section of the application manager, I see applications such as "SIM Toolkit" that make me wonder. So my question is, if I were to obtain the necessary hardware, are all of the required connections on the motherboard to convert the SM-T110 wifi only model into the SM-T111 GSM model? I realize what all this would entail but im curious as it seems most, if not all, of the necessary software is already installed. Any constructive feedback would be appreciated.

Hi Patrick,

It is most likely to be the same board inside just with parts missing. The antenna will not be there, so even soldering a sim slot onto the board even if the space is there would not enable it and no, the wireless antenna will not do instead.

I have often wondered such things but generally companies keep away from such simplistic ways to mod a system and even if they hadn't when you get into the cost for missing parts you can see the price going beyond feasible.

What you could do however, is buy a faulty GSM Samsung tab on ebay with a broken screen and swap it with your screen and you have a GSM tablet.

Thank you, and yes I figured the price for parts and what not would exceed the worth of the tablet and it would be easier to just buy one already carrier compatible. I was just wondering if it would be possible. Again thank you for your input and its nice to hear that someone else out there has the same curiosity as myself.

Hey Patrick,

From what I understand, this device is a non GSM device and won't work on any GSM network anywhere. The device doesn't support cellular connectivity. As for the SIM Toolkit, have you tried going into it? I think its something that's usually just added into Android devices but is particularly for Smartphones and not tablets and seems to be something that is carrier related and that your service provider would activate and give you access to certain paid apps. The apps can vary between service providers but are usually within the lines of Music, videos and other generic apps. I don't know everything about it but that's my 2 cents.

I appreciate the input. No I haven't tried opening the suspected apps. It makes sense though that they would be carrier related. I'm still curious though as to whether the appropriate connections would be present to install the required hardware? Perhaps, hypothetically, Samsung used the same board for both models and just left out certain components then wrapped it in a different case...I know it would be much easier to just buy the 3G model but I find situations like this intriguing. I can see the hardware side being plausible but I've never been much of a software/firmware person. I've already rooted and unlocked the bootloader so I've got some flexibility on that.
