disk shows on screen but console wont play it

This could be an indicator that you need to replace the laser or that your system needs a good cleaning. You can view the PlayStation 2 Optical Disc Drive Lens Cleaning Replacement guide to clean the laser. If your discs are scratch, the age of the laser may have an affect on how well it reads and plays. If your discs have minimal scratches it could be that the laser needs to be replaced due to age and I would recommend doing so to get back to gaming!
