iPhone won't connect to computer

hi i have an iphone 3G. i connected it to charge it and it fully charged and turned on. once i unlocked it it told me to connect it to itunes to start activation. however, once i unplugged it, it turned off. but when i plugged it into my macbook air it switches from showing the apple logo, to the dead battery sign. I've already tried to restart it by pressing the lock and home button for 10 second intervals but still nothing... what do i do???

marilyn, start off with a new battery. If that does not resolve it, replace the dock connector as well. Then re-evaluate. Right now it sounds more like a power issue than anything else. Use these guides to work on your phone.
