on start up apple comes up,, arrows spin & keep spinning

At work we have Macs which I love but at home I have a PC. I know if the computer is in limbo I hold down 3 keys and the start up items pop up. I do not know if Mac has this... The computer was starting to close programs and shutting down more. Now I can not get it to come up the apple pic. comes up then the arrows spin around and then a solid blue screen comes up and the arrows spin. It is like it has lost its way on start up. Is there a quick fix???? My Co. like most is on a very tight budget and I'm praying!!! that I do not have to call a tech in. thank you for anyone that will help me......:-) Beth St. Louis, MO

Options

First try starting in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key on start up. Next start up from a system installation disk by inserting the disk and starting holfing down the "C" key. Go to the second screen pull down menu to Utlilities -> Disk Utility and repair the hard drive.
