no display just a the volume symbol and a blank background light
i only have a bright screen with nothing except the volume bell. will not power off.

If you haven't tried already, hold down the power and home button at the same time for 30 seconds and see if it resets. Sometimes you might have to hold them down for longer. Hopefully it will then shut down and when it comes back on will be working fine again.
