PLEASE HELP: Don't know what to do next?!?

Son's iPad:

Issues:

  • Power button not functioning
  • Volume buttons not functioning
  • Screen started "Ghost typing" (as if someone were touching screen when no one is touching it)
  • Headphone jack not working right (muffled unless pull plug out slightly) -- DECIDED to ignore headphone jack issue for now (son uses Bluetooth headset)

My actions so far:

0. I could not power off, so I did these repairs with device still on

  1. 1 Removed screen (ok I cracked it, but I figured digitizer needed replacing anyway)
  2. 2 Found/ordered parts I thought I needed from iFixit (digitizer, power/volume buttons/cable)
  3. 3 Received parts and installed them (now realize the need a new bezel)

Status:

  • Screen does not come on when I push power/home button
  • * Sometimes I can see that it does come on, but not back lit (so hard to see)
  • * Sometimes I can get beep/siri (but very soft/muffled) if I hold or double click (forget which) the home button
  • * I could head soft sound when plugged in power cable
  • NOW, Not responsive AT ALL (points above do not work)

I have taken apart and pulled/plugged all cables. No change. Wondered if plugging cables "upside down", but don't see how since the ribbon cable can only reach one way. I have left plugged in for more than an hour; no change.

WHAT DO I DO?!?

Any ideas on what the problem is? My son is freaking out.

I know I can fix this with some direction...

Any info/ideas are appreciated.

It turns out all it needed after the repair was a HARD RESET (Hold down power button and home button until Apple logo is visible).

Apparently the battery/inverter can get "unhappy" with the digitizer and LCD unplugged. Maybe because no battery load? I now know this can be prevented by loosening a screw and sliding a piece of plastic film into the battery connector (effectively disconnecting the battery).

Anyway, a HARD RESET is the key to solve a lot of iPad woe's. Any issue you are having, try a hard reset first.

Sounds like you may have damaged the back-light circuitry, which usually happens if the plug in or remove the LCD while it's powered on. You will need to have someone look at it under a microscope and replace the damaged back-light filter or whatever part has blown. This is not something you can usually attempt without all the proper equipment.

Ok. If the power and volume buttons aren't working, it is probably a board problem, either with the daughter board (if you have one in the iPad) or, less likely, the logic board. The digitizer probably just needed to be reconnected, but since you've got a new one, it probably doesn't matter. It looks like you might have a battery problem. Try replacing the battery, then reconnect all the cables, charge it, and see if you get any response.

It is hard to tell if the power and volume buttons are working. However, I THINK the Power button IS working (after replacement) because when I push it (when it was still responsive) I could see the screen come on with no backlight...I didn't know how to test the volume buttons (and now not responsive)....So like I said hard to tell.

Battery seemed to be fine before I started this repair. Could it have gotten damaged in the process? Seems unlikely to me, but I don't know much about these devices.
