What am I doing wrong when refitting the sleep wake button of my 5c? There is a note about the orientation of the metal bar in the repair guide, but there is no photo to illustrate what it means. Can anyone offer any clarification?

It sounds more like a bad power flex. That is the piece that has the actual tactile switch on it.

The switch on the ribbon cable clicks nicely with a fingernail or the flat of a screwdriver when pressed - but when it is installed, nothing.
It is still probably the switch. You are only feeling half of its actuation, but the power button needs the full actuation to work.
