My Grandson thought his peeble steel was water proof. Needless to say it wasn't.
no display, but back lite works. Took back off, it's dry, but no idea what I should try next, except go buy a new one.

I know you posted this ages ago, so please ignore if you've already addressed this.
The Pebble Steel is, per my understanding, waterproof to 5 ATM. I've swum several times while wearing mine and haven't had any issues. I'd get in touch with Pebble directly. Their return/repair process seems to be easy.

I owned a Pebble and own a Pebble Steel now, and i definitely went scuba-diving down to 25m with both models - and everything is still fine. So these things *are* waterproof...
