instal 4790K Processor in Mac Intel 27" late 2013 (ME089)

hello!

as i know all components in new imac is the same?!(not consider logic board and LCD)

by the way, TDP core i7 4790K is 88W. but heatsink is the same?

so, it can be done?

Update

Chosen Solution

First here is the specs of your iMac's series: iMac14,2.

Here are the CPU choices:

  • 3.2 GHz i5 (i5-4570)
  • 3.4 GHz i5 (i5-4670)
  • 3.5 GHz i7 (i5-4771)

As a reference heres the i5-4670 chips specs on Intel's ARC site: i5-4670 Processor and here is the i7-4790K Processor. Note the socket supported: FCLGA1150, so it appears to be physically possible. The only difference is the TDP 84 vs 88 Watts.

Even still the systems firmware may not allow you to make the change. Keep in mind this would be a very large undertaking! You're a trailblazer here I don't know of anyone going that far.

Are you sure you want to take the risks here? Also the 'Thin Series' iMacs are harder to open and you do need the correct tools as you can easily damage the display if you are not careful.

Hi,

The systems EFI firmware doesn't support other CPUs not used in that specific iMac generation.

Only 2012 CPU and only 2013 CPUs can be used within logic boards of that exact generation. So, a 4790K for all 2014 boards, 4771 for all 2013 boards and 3770 (not 3770K) for every 2012 board.

I’ve tested all boards separately.

Oh, that hurts! so... anyone tried any workaround to solve firmware issue? I guess is almost impossible to modify firmware sucessfully.
