whenever I use my headphone jack through whatever external device there is a crackling noise in the left 'output'. What parts do I need to repair/replace to solve this problem?

You could have a bad jack which is not easy to replace. You could have a loose connection on the Audio board, or lastly, the Audio board is bad.
Here's the IFIXIT to get to the Audio board: iMac Intel 20" EMC 2133 and 2210 Audio Board Replacement. Locate the jack header and make a test jack to plug in to the header. Does the problem go away? Does reseating the jack connection fix it? If both of these actions fail its time to replace the audio board.
