initialize and format SSD before installing in MacMini late 2012

Should I initialize and format my SSD before installing?

I have a NewTech Voyager device.

Plan:

Clean up existing internal HD

Use CarbonCopyCloner to make a copy of the existing internal drive

Plug in the SSD and clone from the existing HD

Install SSD in MacMini late 2012

set startup volume to Internal SSD

Thanks for any advice/direction

Here's how I would do it:

Put SSD in enclosure. Connect to Mac.

Initialize and format SSD using Disk Utility: GUID and Mac OS X Journaled.

Restart MacMini in Restore Mode; or by holding Alt/Option and selecting Recovery.

Go to Disk Utility when in Recovery or Restore Mode.

Select your HD, perform Repair Permissions + Repair Disk a couple of times.

Select your HD, choose Restore; choose your original HD as source and SSD as target. CAREFUL, don't mix up source and target on this step.

Once done, select your SSD and also perform Repair Permissions and Repair Disk.

Turn off machine. Swap drives. Et voilà.
