Is it normal for built in superdrive to be noisey, i.e. loud

Is it normal for built in superdrive to be noisey, i.e. loud when playing dvd. It is not the fan, a it stops dead when paused, and stop button. it is the disk playing on full speed while spinning. I didn't expect it to be that loud. I have a Samsung on my mac mini, as it is compatible with apples super drive, and that is as quiet as a mouse. Any ideas folks?
