I accidentally saved an excel sheet over an existing sheet.

Thanks for the tips. However I had not saved it on my time machine yet and I cannot find the excel document in the Library/Microsoft Auto Recovery.

I am a newbie with this so have very little skills. Help has to be spelt out at a basic level please, thank you.

Not quite true! You'll need to use a file recovery app. To see if you can recover it. But you need to use an external bootable drive with it as you don't want to alter or have the systems OS alter the drive in anyway until you recover the file. You see, the files space as been marked as free space but in fact is still there! But because it's marked as free space any else could use the space so it's important to not use your system until you can recover the file. Hopefully it's not to late.

Dan is correct if the original document had been saved at some point. It will also be on your time machine backup.
