Motor turns over slow and then stater starts smoking

I have an ez mulch rider with a 15.5 Briggs and Stratton motor. My problem is, that it turns over real slow and then the starter starts to smoke. Any suggestion?

Ian matthews, two possibilities come immediately to mind. the motor is/has seized and the starter can't turn it over , or (most likely) your starter windings are shorted. Remove the spark plugs from your engine and see if your starter can not turn the engine over. Ultimately I'd replace the starter first and see what it does.
