2000 mercury cougar Car has no power and jerky

I have a 2000 mercury cougar. I just replaced the fuel pump and when you start it runs fine at first and then it boggs out when we rev it up and then it idles down and dies and then I can't restart it until it cools off ( but its not overheating). I have tried to drive it and when I do its like its not getting power and it is real jerky and then it idles down and dies. Please Help..

Answer this question I have this problem too

I recently replaced the fuel pump on my 97 Cougar. I had the same issue and corrected it as follows. Not sure if this will help but it did for me. First off, make sure that the fuel filter has been changed.

Then, since this is a pressurized system, there will be air gaps in the line. You will need to turn the key on and off at least 6 times to build the pressure and fill the air gaps. This was per my manual, I had to turn the key on and off at least 20 times, don't know why. This should do it. I had the problem where I could not increase speed at a normal rate without it trying to die or cut out. I repeated this procedure several times and now all is good. I do not know why I had so much trouble, but maybe this will help.
