Slow iMac and beach ball spins constantly.
Why is my iMac 24" EMC 2134 with 4G dram running so slow? He is only about one fifth full...

I would start with running off of an external boot drive, then run Disk Utility repairing both the permissions & the disk its self. You should make a backup before you do this just in case! Its possible the drive is failing.
