How full is the drive? Backup the drive with Time Machine to an external hard drive. Use your original system installation disk to startup from. Run Disk Utilities and re-format the drive using the "write zeros" option. This will take several hours to overnight. Now re-install the system and do a restoration from your Time Machine backup.
