iPod 5th Generation Completely Dead

My iPod 5th Gen is completely dead. I've attempted all resuscitation techniques I can find online. Last signs of life were faded screen showing "charging" icon when attached to speaker dock. Attempted multiple resets (always solved previous hiccups) but it only sounded/felt like an internal mechanism was attempting to "turn over" or "spin up" unsuccessfully. Now absolutely no response to reset procedures and won't charge from speaker dock or USB. Also tried disconnecting for 24+ hours then charging (no joy). Originally thought battery failure but is this a mechanical issue?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Todd Dolbier, even a failed hard drive will not stop your iPod from coming on. It would give you either a frowning face or a red x etc. "Last signs of life were faded screen showing "charging" icon when attached to speaker dock." leads me to believe that this is a power issues. This model iPod has issues with the battery connector breaking off the board. I suggest that you open it up using these guides and take a closer look. Get yourself at minimum a new battery, and carefully check the connector. Of course you also need to make sure that you have a good cable etc. the "internal mechanism" you heard was most likely the hard drive, but remember it is also the part that requires most of the power.

Replaced the battery and ipod responds in exactly the same way. Sounds like it's trying to "spin up" in the hard drive and then I hear it "quit" with a sort of a soft "ping." Screen stays completely dark. If it's just the hard drive then why don't I get the "broken hard drive" message on the screen as I've seen others report (hard drive is suggested below)? Screen was previously replaced and looks fine...just kind of faded to black when the troubles started (indicated recharging when the ipod was in its dock). Any other thoughts? This thing fits a really nice harman kardon speaker dock (new ipods won't) so I'd like to refurbish but am starting to wonder if it's worth buying a new drive since I'm not confident I can determine what is wrong...

Hard drive must have a malfunction! Those tiny form factor drives are not shock resistant and the heads can easily slip off the ramp.

Replaced the batter as recommended above. Ipod still acts the same. Can it really be the drive if I'm getting no message on the screen? Screen appears to be intact but is completely dark (even with new batter). Still won't start up and quits after trying to spin the drive. Still think a new hard drive might fix things?
