The logo is in the external cover of laptop but the light of the logo is common to the Retina display.

Under your retina display you can find a series of films and sheets that manipulate light before sending it to the user's eye (front) & logo (back).

Be carefull with this films, if you make wrinkles you will see dark zones in your screen

Here is the correct IFIXIT guide to replace your display: MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2012 Display Assembly Replacement.

You also don't need to take the panel apart as David answer shows. When you buy the full LCD panel & lid assembly: MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Mid 2012/Early 2013) LCD Display & Lid Assembly.

Working with the sheets is very tricky! and if you stain or damage them they are hard to find. Besides you are likely to chip the glass and also a lot more work! I service Macs for a very large firm and we don't even try to replace the LCD panels alone.

Just to clarify things on the lit logo in the lid: The backlight of the display lights it. If you have a broken or stained Apple logo you will need to replace the compete lid.
