iPhone 3GS won't turn on, battery hot while charging

My iPhone 3GS died and wouldn't restart. While charging it the battery got hot like it was attempting a charge but after several hours (overnight) it still wouldn't start. I attempted connecting it to iTunes, nothing. Several threads here indicated it was probably in need of a new battery.

I replaced the battery with a battery and tools I bought from ifixit. I plugged it in to charge and after a few minutes the phone started and got to the apple startup symbol. when I checked it a few minutes later it showed the red battery symbol, meaning it hadn't actually started up. Now it is dead again, won't restart or do anything, but the battery feels warm.

What else could be the problem here?

thesilvafamily1, " I attempted connecting it to iTunes, nothing." leads me to believe that you are having issues with the dock connector. since you already changed the battery, I would go ahead and change the dock connector and get another new battery. also, check connector number 4 on your logic board. make sure that everything is connected properly. Anytime you have issues with the charging circuit, it may damage the battery. Once you have the dock connector and the battery replaced, re-evaluate and let us know.

Would a faulty dock connector cause the battery not to charge? It seems like since the battery gets warm it is attempting to charge. I'll definitely give your suggestion a try. I really am just trying to get the phone to turn on so I can get the photos off of it.

It is possible that there are issues with the charging circuitry. Start with the dock connector, if it still causes issues, you may have to double check the battery. Make sure that it has an APN number that works. With the iPhone 3GS the magical APN appears to be 616-0435. There may of course be issues with the power management IC etc. Those repairs are tricky since they involve working with the small SMC's on the board
