I shutdown my Mac because it was running slow and now when I turn it back on the apple logo appears along with the status bar (?) below it and it gets about 1/3 of the way through and the apple logo is replaced with a circle with a slash through it and that's as far as it goes?!?! HELP!!

Sounds like the drive is in trouble! Do you have an external bootable drive? If you don't have one do you have a friend that can help you create a bootable drive? All you need is a 16 GB or bigger USB thumb drive and the OS installer you can download from Apples App store (on your friends system).
If you have a newer model you could try booting up in the recovery partition and the drive is not too far gone.
Until we know which model you have it will be difficult to answer more fully.
Your system does have a recovery partition and it also supports recovery over the internet if the firmware was updated. Here's a good Apple T/N: Startup key combinations for Mac that explains your options.

I have a 16 GB usb drive but not any friends with macs.
You'll need to try to find a new friend with a Mac, sorry :-( You could try visiting an Apple Store to see if they can help you.

Do you think it has to do with a virus of some sort? I don't know much about computers in that aspect
Not likely a virus. Hard Drives do fail, often people bang their systems.
