Why did the water stop flowing?

I turned on the faucet, heard a pop and the water stopped flowing.

Does the water run in the rest of the house?

I would check under the sink and other plumbing places to see if the pipe broke. If so , turn off your water mains immediately and call a plumber.

If other faucets are working etc, look at the output of the faucet. At the outlet, there is a removable wire mesh or plastic screen that helps to disrupt the natural flow of water. This un-screws from the end of the faucet. You may need a wrench or a pair of common pliers. Wrap it with a thin cloth or napkin to avoid scratching the chrome.

Inspect the mesh or plastic filter for debris. Often what happens, is the rubber valve washer disintegrates over time, and slowly clogs the screen, and can block water from flowing. It can also happen suddenly if a large piece breaks off.
