Why is my wifi icon and hardware missing?

I have a macbook pro 5,3 15 inch unibody mid 2009 on Mavericks and the wifi is not working ...The icon does not show ,I tried to create a new network in system preferences and the wifi option wasn't available, I click network diagnostics and the wifi option was grey. I believe it's not hardware because in the beginning wifi was good when my hard drive was wiped that's when it occured

Hey! You must make sure drivers for wifi card is installed on your macbook fully, becosse problem after HDD replacing...

@emailgregnow - Sadly, this is not the correct answer. The drivers are part of the OS-X so simple act of installing the OS you get what you need. It sounds like you have a hardware problem like MichaelJrRekson has. There is a few things here you can try to fix this. I recommend you create your own question with all of the details so we can work it out with you.
