15" G4 Al 1.67mhz SD
I have tested both memory slots with same chip and one freezes machine whenever it is used. Can I put a 2Gb chip in the remaining slot to get full capacity? It works without incident with a 1Gb chip in it now.

I'm pretty sure a 2 GB chip would not work. Sometimes slots partially fail. If you still have the original 512K chip, try it in the bad slot.
