My iPod overheats while in use only and freezes the screen-HELP?

I don't know how old my IPOD is, but it is several years old. Never ever had a problem with it. Now, I will be using it and it will just stop and freeze and when I touch it, it is SUPER hot!! If I toggle the switch up top to show the orange, it will cool down. If I don't it stays really hot. I've tried plugging it in to help unfreeze it but that doesn't work. When it cools down, the batter shows red and dead although I had just had it completely charged before use. Do you have any idea what could be wrong? How can I make this stop before my IPOD catches on fire??

Thank you! I think the heat source is the light that stays on all the time. Isn't it supposed to dim after you pick your song? I used it today and set mine to an album then put the hold switch on. It ran fine and absolutely no heat. Any suggestions on that?

the backlight shouldn't get that hot. but the "always on" problem could be a software issue - i would try to reset the ipod first: press and hold the menu and the select button until the ipod restarts - this should take something around 6-10 seconds

it might be the battery - but i don't know how the hold swtich fit's into this - maybe there are some other issues.

i would open the device and power it on - that way you can "feel" the heatsource.
