Ran into the same issue and it was easy to solve once I read the clue here regarding the contacts. I had installed the bottom dock connector/speaker assembly wrong!!! The assembly has three screws one is under the connector cable be careful when you bend it to remove/insert this screw where I went wrong is that the the base dock conector goes OVER the bezel screw holders not under it. When I reassembled the phone I placed the dock UNDER the bezel and that pushed it far enough down as to the home button being unable to make contact. I quickly tore down the phone placed the connector in its "proper" place and voila Home button is happy again. The easiest clue is to try to connect a dock cable if you have to force it or play with it to go in its on the wrong place.

Good luck,

First, try restoring the phone in iTunes. If that doesn't work it is more likely a hardware issue. The home button connects to the logic board with contacts, unlike the rest of the front panel which uses cables. If something is in the way, dirt or a piece of plastic then the phone can't hear you pressing the button. Good Luck!
