forgot my password, and it wont let me get into it

Put it in recovery mode and do a restore. You will have to hold the power and home button down until the phone resets. A USB cable needs to be in the device for this to work. Then you let go of the power button and just hold the home button. This will kick the iPod into recovery mode for you to restore it.

What is DFU mode?
It stands for Device Firmware Upgrade. "A special mode in the device that bypasses the loading of the operating system for recovery purposes; in this mode, the screen of the device is blank."

After(?) the reset is finished, hold the home button till the ipod says "your ipod is in recovery mode"? And how long will my finger be on the home button before i get the message?

you need to put it in DFU mode and restore it
to do this:
reset the ipod holding the home and power button at the same time
After this is done, hold the home button til the ipod says "your ipod is in recovery mode"
