iPod mac-formatted, pc windows 8.1; any way of transferring music?

I have an iPod with a lot of music on it, all put on via an old eMac. I have a new Lenovo laptop running Windows 8.1.

I want to transfer the music from the iPod onto my laptop. When I plug the iPod in, however, I get messages (in separate windows) saying

"You need to format the disk in drive F: before you can use it", and

"iTunes has detected a Macintosh-formatted iPod. You must restore this iPod before you can use it on Windows", and

"[Serial no. of iPod] Software Version 2.0.1 If you are experiencing problems with your iPod, you can restore its original settings by clicking Restore iPod".

I assume "formatting" and "restoring" both entail deletion of all the material on the iPod, which I do not wish to do.

Is there any way round this? I've looked at some solutions suggested elsewhere and they do not seem exactly to cover this situation.

Any suggestions gratefully received. Well, any suggestions that might work for someone with negligible computing skills.

Thank you.
