Distortion on iPod sound quality

For some time now the sound on my iPod is distorted and sounds like the earphones a being driven too hard (which they are not). I play the same track on my MacBook Pro and I can play the same track at much higher volume without any distortion. I rip cd's to my laptop in lossless mode then transfer to my iPod. Any ideas?
