Hi. I tend t accept your opinion about the chip. It was actually "repaired" by a private lab and I am not sure if the chip was replaced or just heated as you wrote as it worked for some time and died again. Is there any way to check the WIFI chip to be sure it is the chip or the antenna ? You are right it is not worthy replacing the chip when a used iphone 4s could be bought in resonable price and the old one will serve a regular with no internet connection.

Thank you very much for your help.

This is almost certainly a WiFi chip defect and not an antenna problem. Is the WiFi option grayed out, or you just have low signal?

I'm going to guess that it is grayed out, and that the prior "repairs" were shoddy shops that charged money just to heat up the chip, which sometimes can give you a little bit more time. The "right" repair for this problem is actually replacing the chip. That is not a DIY project, but who knows---once I didn't know how to microsolder either :)

It will be hard to find a place that would be willing to replace a WiFi chip in the iPhone 4. The cost of the repair exceeds the value of the device. It would be cheaper to buy another older iPhone--you'll get a lot more mileage out of a used iPhone 4s than a 4.
