CD/DVD spinning not playing

Just registered for ifixit, so am not sure if my previous question will be answered (?) Am asking again here: I can insert a CD, it may or may not play a track or two, then it stalls, and i hear a three part spinning sound: a start up whinning sound, then a spinning sound, then a wind down sound, and the whole thing starts all over again, over and over spinning. It may or may not eject via the keyboard, but I cannot eject it from ITunes. Sometimes I can't even get iTunes to respond. If I can get iTunes to respond, I can usually click "Quit iTunes" and then hit the eject button on the keyboard. Can I remove and/or clean and/or fix this myself. Tnx.
