Pixelation across home slide button

I have an old iPhone 3G, but I cannot get past the home screen because of screen pixilation that runs across the slide open button. Can you tell me what needs to be replaced? Is it the display assembly or just the front panel assembly?? There is a big difference in cost so I want to get the right thing.
