Why does my trackpad button appear sticky or non-responsive?

My trackpad button has recently started responding only sporadically. I actually thought the hard drive was about to fail, because I thought it was freezing, but discovered that it was just that the trackpad button press wasn't actually being registered by the machine. Using a bluetooth mouse, it's perfect.

I can continue using the mouse, but I'd obviously like the trackpad to work. Anyway I can take it apart and clean it or check it? I've seen the tri-wing screws; they give me the heebie-jeebies...!

Update

Yeah, I checked the battery and it's flush. There's no bulge or anything in it. Probably still needs to be changed, but don't think it's the issue with the trackpad.

@remacberlin, I think you're right, it probably just needs a good clean but I've no idea how to get at it! I'll see about getting one of those tri-wing screwdrivers.

I have noticed it's getting a lot hotter than I remember. Battery is also only taking a 98% charge. It won't charge the whole way. That sounds like a good suggestion so I'll check it out.

Get with apple. If your MB/MBP is a A1278 MOdel, there's a issue with the battery. The battery sweats and ball up, it's very dangerous. If that the problem the Apple should replace your battery and fix your trackpad. While your there ask for a replacement charger as well.

Check to see if you battery is swelling. I don't know about the unibody, but on older models that was the first sign of a failing battery.

I don't think that the battery problem is connected to the trackpad trouble. The trackpad probably only neeed a good cleaning. That Apple is using "tamper proof" screws in their later models is giving me the creeps too. We all have to invest in new tools, it seems
