Graphics problems but External Display Works

Essentially the screen is unusable without an external display, however the external display is fully functional with zero artifacts or issues. The screen is usually some shade of graph with artifacts. I have attached an image of the display.

What is the most likely cause and how should I go about fixing this?

I have the same problem, only my internal display sometimes works just fine, sometimes even for hours/days, then it goes back to gray screen and then I can only use my macbook with external display.

To double check things try plugging in an external monitor does the stripes go way? If they do then you know the issue is within the internal LCD screen. Most of the time someone bangs or sits something heavy on the lid damaging the screen.

If you are up to it replacing the lid assembly is not too difficult. Here's the IFIXIT guide: MacBook Air 11" Mid 2012 Display Assembly Replacement.

Using an external LCD shows zero indication that anything is wrong, yes.
