Replacement of back glass only, not the whole back panel

I am one of the many who already shattered the back of their phone. Entire back panels are impossible to find at this point, so I ordered the glass only part that seems to be popping up all over the place. Is it possible to replace the glass only or does the panel have to be replaced as a whole? Can you post a step-by-step guide?

Hey Im having the same EXACT problem. I noticed that they are NOW selling the whole back piece with the housing which makes it a lot easier to replace but costs more money...but I already purchased the back glass and im trying to figure out what kind of adhesive to use to stick the new glass in place of the old broken glass that i am going to attempt to pry out. PLEASE help if you can, thanks.

You're in luck, because the guide for that part exists already. I'm not aware of the back panel being separable from any parts attached to it because I haven't personally seen any of the "ebay" parts available for the iPhone 4. Unfortunately, none of the vendors I've seen on ebay have taken a shot of the inner face of the rear panel. If you can find a picture of the inner face of one of these replacement panels, I can tell you if it will work.

The third picture on this step shows what the inner face needs to look like.

Thanks, i did see that post. It however, does not address the replacement of the "glass only". I received my part in the mail yesterday and it was exactly as they stated, a piece of glass only. Replacing the whole panel is easy...It seems to me that there would be a lot of scary prying if I was to attempt to replace the glass only. I was hoping someone else had attempted before I do.

Ah, ok. We haven't tried to take the frame off the glass yet because it seems likely that it would result in ruining a perfectly fine stock glass panel. You would definitely need to use a razor blade to peel off the logic board shaped antenna or shield. After that, you're going to have to experiment. Historically, Apple has stuck glass down with adhesive that loses its grip with temperature. I'd use a heat gun along with a thin prying tool to lift the frame off the glass. This guide is for an iPad, but shows the general procedure for separating glass panels from their frames.

Thanks, good advice. It should at least get me started. I am debating right now whether to try and replace it or wait until the entire back panel is available.

Does anyone have step by step instructions on replacing the glass panel for the rear battery door only? I didn't buy a rear panel with housing, just the glass. also, the LED flash area looks like just a glass hole and not like the diffuser on the original back to my phone. How do I keep that diffuser or transfer it on to the new glass?

I made the exact same mistake of purchasing one of these without realizing that it needed a housing. Checked eBay out last night and have just bought the plastic housing (no glass just the plastic housing it sits on). What's even better is that it comes with an adhesive patch so you can stick the glass down... I'm sold. Beats buying at $100 dollar back with a housing. There like $9 with about $5 postage, check it out, I'll leave a post once I've got it, let you guys know how well it works. Ciao

Here is the guide for iPhone 4 Disassembly, you could do it as the steps,

The iPhone 4 battery door include the back glass lens and inner plate, you also could buy the iPhone 4 back glass lens or battery door from somewhere else.

Hi,

I'm pretty sure you can get the back panel on ebay for like $15 from aussie sellers with the pentalobe screwdriver supplied and suction cap & a plastic "opener.

undo the 2 screws that are located on each side of the dock connector, slide the back up, then gently slide the plastic opener beteen the back glass & the frame, lift it away from frame. replace with new back, push together then slide down , replace the 2 screws.

about 5 min for a novice

be sure to turn the phone off first just in case!!
