Your iPod mini uses a micro hard drive. Here's the IFIXIT guide to replace it: iPod Mini Hard Drive Replacement. Here's the IFIXIT replacement part: iPod Mini 6 GB Hard Drive (Used). Here's the Microdrive spec sheet: Hitachi Microdrive CF+ Type II model.

You could also buy a Compact Flash (CF II type) to SD card adapter. Buy an SDXC card of whatever size you want, I have a 64 GB, 128 GB and a 256 GB in some of mine and you can go up to 512 GB. The cards has to be formatted to FAT 32. I formatted mine in a Sony Alpha 350 camera or any camera that takes CF cards but the SDXC card, on it's own, should format in an ordinary camera or on a computer. I fitted the CF adapter with all the sticky tape and blue plastic buffers but this really isn't necessary as the drive is now solid state and more robust. After rebuilding the Mini (put in a new battery if in doubt) connect to itunes and follow the reformatting menu that pops up and you should now have a more reliable, less battery hungry iPod mini.

Good Luck
